  • Parametric spacing

I need to distribute 12,000 copies of an object along a path. Max's Spacing tool does exactly what I need, but I really hate having 12,000 objects in the scene. Is there a way of doing this parametrically that I'm drawing a blank on? I was almost able to do it with Multiscatter but that doesn't have a way to make the rotation of the copies conform to the path. I'm sure I could do it with Rail Clone, but I don't want to have to buy anything to do this.

You can use the free itoosoft clone plugin + pathdeform but it will distort each object as it curves...

use the max spacing tool with the source object set to "display as box" get it right, then shunt the whole lot out to an xref

        Thanks for the responses, guys.

Yeah, I'm kinda leaning towards the x-ref solution. PathDeform always gives me disastrous results because it doesn't re-orient the object to the beginning of the path, and I can never seem to quite get it there, no matter what I do.

          It's a pretty terrible modifier...

It does, i had to switch back from forest pro to use this feature recently. you have to check on 'use regular pattern', then use scale multi to change the density. there may be some trial and error - put down some markers from another method and adjust the scale till it looks like it matches.

Railclone should do this easy if you have it, forest pro also as Neil pointed out.

can forest do it? I have spent countless hours trying and ended up having to reinstal multiscatter. How do you get forest objects to follow the curve of a spline?
railclone doesn't work for what i was trying to do either - it's material system is super limiting.

Oh maybe forest wouldn't do it on a curve but railclone would for sure. What are you trying to do with the materials?

Update: Yes, Neil is right. It is possible to do this with Multiscatter, and I am doing it.

If you can manage to get Particle Flow to put particles along a path (I think it can do this), then you can use the VRayInstancer object.

                      Best regards,
