This happens often; I can't unlink because it's grayed out.

Are you saying that you can't unparent the default layer from the other one? Because I can't figure out how you got it parented in the first place, on my Max Design 2015 Ext2 I can't nest the default layer.


Edit: Okay weird, I was able to do it but first I had to nest a layer underneath the default, and then trying to nest the default under it's own child, swapped the two. Doing the same thing again (try to nest the default layer's parent to the default layer) swapped them back, at which point the regular layer can be unnested completely. Guessing you found a bug where the default layer doesnt allow un-nesting.

Layer nesting doesn't come through when merging. So you could merge everything into a new scene, but of course you would have to re-nest all the layers again the way you like it.
