The GeForce 980 Report Card

Chiefly X99 based boards from Asus and AsRock.

Also had a 980 in an x79 Asus board with a Sandy Bridge -E. This was moved to a newer machine, but it ran fine. That one needed a BIOS update to work right with either a 780, 780Ti, or the 980 (that same machine has gone through all three of those).

Let us know if you figure it out.

Here is something new. I decided to try different drivers to compare the results. I went into my device manager and uninstalled the current driver. When completed, I proceeded to install one of the 980 drivers. Before installation, it checks your hardware comparability. After attempting to install two different drivers, I received an error message telling me the driver is not compatible with my hardware. Any thoughts why that is happening?

Ok......here is the latest. Moved the card to a different slot, updated the BIOS with the same results. The card has a lag time issue, particularly in PS. I pretty much exhausted over this process....time to punt. The only thing left to do....try a different card. Details at 11............... Thanks for taking the time out your schedule to help out. I will let you know when I come up with a cure for the mess.

No Problem but I do have one more question for you. You mentioned using the 700 series in your shop. I could try that.....how does it compare to the 980?

The 780Ti was pretty close to the 980. It is generally about 10-15% slower, but some thingsmay be faster. Ithe 780 Ti does draw more power.

The 780 draws even more power, and I seem to recall it was around 20-30% slower than the 780Ti.

The other advantage of the 980 is that it has 4GB, whereas (at least initially) the 780Ti was limited to 3GB (to try to sell more Titans).

The other 700 series, like the 750, I think is considerably slower. I suppose I could test it. We have been putting 750s in render nodes recently, as they are supposedly the best price/performance going. But we don't do a lot with GPUs on the farm. Fusion's OpenCL tools or OpenGL renderer being the main thing.

What cable are you using to connect the video card to the monitor? HDMI? DVI? Displayport?

I found a nasty lag using HDMI with a couple different cards and monitors and televisions where with DVI or Display Port I dont get that lag at all.

With my GTX980 Im currently driving a 27" 2.5K monitor with DVI and a 27" 4K monitor with Display Port and have no lag issues at all. The only problem I'm having is every time I wake up the computer all my windows and icons are shifted to the 4K monitor which is getting a little annoying.

Im also using the Adobe CS master collection (PS, AI, PR, AE...) a couple games, hardware monitoring apps, itunes, QT, VLC, Solidworks, MS office...
I have quite a bit loaded on it that I use on a regular basis.

Are you sure this is the video card? You tried another card in the same machine, right?

Ok....I took your suggestion and tried out another card, a Quadro K5200 and the results was not much better. So I would assume it's safe to say we can rule out the video card. I'm a bit befuddled at the moment but the person who built my system said we could try out a different motherboard, chipset and bios. He will mirror my HD and put it into a different system and I will put it to the test. One small detail I left out in my initial email, I am running a Wacom tablet, Intous Pro in conjunction with a mouse. It appears to perform well in Max but a bit sluggish in PS and terrible in AutoCAD. You might be asking, why am I using a tablet for these apps, bottom line, I have been doing this type of work for over 15 years and if I used just a mouse, I would have no wrist left. In my previous system, the tablet performed like a champ.

Haha! I have been doing this stuff since 1990, and I don't have much of a wrist left.

I have run into some kind of slowdown with Wacom tablets in the past, but I can't recall what the problem was. May have been a Wacom driver issue.

Have you tried disconnecting the tablet to see if you have problems when using only the mouse? Maybe try a different USB port (USB 2 vs 3 ?) for the tablet, etc.

There is a significant difference in the vanilla GTX 750 and a GTX 750 Ti. I have used both and the 750 Ti with 2GB actually offers acceptable performance for high demand situations and in a ~$150 card.
