  • VRay and single 120 core pc?

    Hi all

Has the issues been fixed yet with machines with more than 64 cores? Can I safely run VRay on a single machine with 120 cores (HT) and use all cores without having to do any workarounds or hacks to make it work?

This machine might be used as a DR slave. The workstations will typically have 12 cores only
    Kind Regards,
    Morne

No, we still haven't implemented this, although it might be possible to enable it with an environment variable.

The only workaround now is to run one or more DR servers on that machine (at different ports, if there is more than one of them).

    Best regards,
    Vlado

      1) What is the biggest machine we can use VRay on without having to do workarounds like this? 64 cores?

      2) For the 120 core machine if we run more than one DR server on it, would each one need its own render node license?
      Kind Regards,
      Morne

64 cores is the Windows maximum, yes. For more cores, programs have to use different APIs.

No. Only one license is needed.

Just curious, is windows 10 raising this?

No; the problem is that the affinity mask for a processor in the standard Win64 API is 64-bit. For more cores, a different API needs to be used, which involves the so-called processor groups. So we need to add extra code in V-Ray to make sure that we can spawn threads on all cores. We did implement this, but there were some issues which we need to iron out (f.e. if the user manually sets processor affinity from the task manager, weird things started happening).

                Best regards,
                Vlado

ridiculous price for the overall power.
For that price I´d rather take 100 of these

800 cores where each is 800mhz faster.

We're in SA so once we imported the thing and paid the customs taxes etc, it ends up double the costs again

The issue is space, electricity usage and license costs

What if we split the 120 core machine into 2 VMs?
Will VRay run on a virtual server, and would we need a license for each VM?

It depends on how the network is set up, but typically you will need a license for each VM.
