gtx 980 slow in max - troubleshooting help needed

I have a new computer with an nvidia GTX 980 card and at times, a fairly simple scene will run very slowly.

A computer with a much older card and an older slower CPU will move fluidly through the same scene.

Does anyone know of any problems with the 980? Or any where to adjust settings? I cannot figure out why max is acting this way on much newer and faster hardware.

I just got a new machine with the same card. One of the IT guys in my office did the build. When we tested the machine, we found the benchmarks were running a lot slower than they should be. DirectX 9 speeds for example were at an absolute crawl. It turns out that we had stuck the card in a secondary slot on the motherboard to keep it away from the cpu heat sink. After we put the card in the primary slot, everything ran as fast as it should. You might want to check this on your own setup. Do you have the latest drivers?
