ive read many contradictory reports about the maximum number of gpus possible in a workstation.
consensus seems to be 8, but ive also seen some people state this is only for SLI, and windows doesnt limit the number, its a bios or driver issue.
ive also heard the limit is 8 in winxp and 6/7 in win 7, unlimited in linux/limit of 8 in linux, tesla cards are not limited but geforce are, etc etc.. all contradictory.
ive also heard the limit is for gaming, and for gpu compute the limit is nonexistant/different.
has anyone actually tested extreme numbers?
i ask because i think ive found a nice way to connect gpus at pcie1x speed over usb3! would need to be a diy job, but could actually work out quite cheap.
with a few good usb3 cards in the pcie slots on the motherboard you could get a whole stack of gpus connected. if the really low connection speed wasnt too much of an issue you could even use usb hubs to multiply further.
however kinda less exciting if the limit is 8.
