I spoke to a friend who runs a tracking company with about 40 employees. I mentioned to him about getting paid, and said that I'm a bit held back by enforcing contracts or threatening legal action since this will impact future projects and reputation.

What he told me was - it happens to every one with no exception. And then he added that a few of his clients didn't pay (he has a subscription base company) they didn't pay for 6 month or so, he sent them an invoice with interest applied to that sum, as well as legal letter. The clients started paying right away and have been good on that since that email.

I have also noticed that even good clients seem to be swamped and slow to respond, lately. I know for me, cash flow is important, so not getting paid for a few days of work can hurt. I have tested Fundbox, which does what it says; I use Freshbooks for my accounting.

Yeah we have a client that owes us about 4 months worth of bills (no small amount), but our contracts are rock solid so we're about to threaten legal action. happens every couple of years where a big client with a lot of work done (and paid) starts getting sloppy paying bills. they straighten up pretty quickly when you can get a lawyer involved.
