  • weirdest 3dsmax bug

    Hi guys,
wanted to share a bug just happened to me. So i had a scene , it was working perfectly. I saved it a while ago , now i'm opening it and tada , if i open material editor and trying to choose a material or a map for any material - 3dsmax just hangs. Taking exact the same amount of memory / processor every time. Someone had thing like this ? 3dsmax 2014 latest service pack , vray 3.20.02. Trying to merge object by groups - it hangs randomly... once i managed to merge scene completely - even material editor was working , but hey ! after i opened and close material editor - scene hanged when i tried to move anything. Just really unbelievable !!!

Have you got Hairfarm installed?? Or any other material plugin that is trying to find a license.

Clean 3dsmax , even tried without VRay and service packs. With service pack the same story. What i will try to do tomorrow is delete all the objects via maxscript and try to do something. Will see what happens. Just thought someone may encounter something like this.

This has been happening to me in recent months rather randomly. It occurs when I open the Material/Map Navigator and have it set to display small or large icons. It never happens when I have it set to display list, and I can't remember if it happens when I display list+icons. And again, it seems to happen rather randomly. I suppose it could have something to do with certain kinds of maps in the scene. I'll have to come back to this thread the next time it happens.

Can any of you generate a minidump file from the 3dsmax.exe process the next time this happens and email it to me at vlado@chaosgroup.com ? It will help me figure out if the problem is in V-Ray.

          Best regards,
          Vlado

"The operation could not be completed
Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed"
Is there a tool to make a dump ?
            What about ProcExplorer ?

You can use process explorer, yes. Make sure you create a minidump, not a full dump file.

                Hi Vlado,
I've managed to make a minidump of hanged 3dsmax process , https://www.sendspace.com/file/6pzn1g you can download it from here. It is about 125mb.
                Thanks !

Today by accident found out that it is not hanging completely. When i press to choose material , it goes away for 2-3 minutes and after that popups with materials. Library is clean , only scene materials, no plugins being used except vray. Other scenes are fine. it is like it renders a material with 10k texture preview

Vlado , you had a chance to look at that minidump to find out if it is vray related thing somehow ?
                    Thanks.

I did; there's nothing related to V-Ray there. It's stuck in some code for the Nitrous viewport. Perhaps you can try switching to DirectX viewport and see if it helps?

Thanks a lot, Vlado ! I've tried switching to legacy Direct3D and it works without hangings... That is really weird as there are only some scenes affected. Thanks anyway for your time to check that !

I've heard that switching to D3D fixes some issues with hanging, which I've been experiencing lately. Huge. huge waiting times after a render is "Done", before max is responsive again - no render elements being used and no files being written to cause it. Happens with or without big complex scenes. I need to switch to D3D and see if it fixes it. Driving me nuts lately.

Tried to update to latest drivers though that did not help. It may be just max file corrupted or some kind of map / material causing this ?
