I turned on reflection and GI and rendered it out again. The render times where a lot longer and I am not sure the quality is any better. So far, almost everyone had a different suggestion on how to handle larger projects. I think I'll work with proxies for plants/trees, and everything else collapsed geometry,

I am having refresh issue going from wire to shaded. It takes about 30 seconds; I would like to toggle back and forth instantly. Anything I can do?Bobby Parker

Work with xrefs mate, it's the best way to keep organised and your master file light.
Basically the master file should contain the cams and light with RPM data.
All the rest should be xrefed out, and your master file will take 200Ko and save in a sec. Otherwise you'll end up with a master file of 600Mo that takes 4min to save every 5min with the autoback.
This lets you load and unload geo easily as well, so every-time you open your scene you're not obliged to load everything. We have scene with way way way bigger data sets than your and with all xrefs turned on, it could take up to 20 min to load the masterfile only.

I kinda went old school, since I got so many different suggestions. If I keep things in shaded mode, it isn't so bad.

Hey Bobby,
As others have suggested XRef Scenes is a good way to go for organisation and performance but it's still going to struggle when you've turned everything on. You definitely want to start attaching objects that have same material together, perhaps do this by building and see what the performance is like then. Even if it's instanced geometry 3DS Max will still really struggle with large amounts of it, no matter how good your PC is. I'm working on a project that's come from Revit with a few million polygons, I've attached all the windows together, all the internal walls, etcetc and it runs perfectly.
It can be a tedious process but it will make your life working on that project so much easier.Freelance 3D Generalist
