I would still do it with an opacity map with filtering disabled... along with some bump, it should look quite good. Either that, or 2d displacement with water level.
In case anyone else has a similar problem in the future!
Followed Peters tutorial, rendered a Z depth of one piece of mesh, and used Vray Disp (pretty much used the exact same settings as well). Seems to render without trouble, was worried about ram but so far so good.
I didnt use it on the RC object as that seemed to crash, so just made a reference of my RC spline -> edit poly + UV map + Vray Disp.
Keeping the RC for the solid framing and band rasters.
nice, looks good, and thanks for sharing your results. I found so far RC will properly clip vrayproxies, when set to "include" but not quite right "exclude."

Hi Alex,
I hope you don't mind me jumping in here. We're interested in why RailClone might not be performing as expected and if possible we'd like to carry out a few tests internally. I wonder if you'd be able to share some details with us so we can take a closer look and diagnose any issues. We've looked at the mesh from the first post and it shouldn't cause any problems, but of course it depends on how the array is being built, is it curved, sliced etc. If you were able to give us more info or even share a simplified scene that contains the splines used to create the RC arrays that would be fantastic. You can contact us at support@toosoft.com if you prefer not to post details publicly.
Many thanks!
Paul
