i thought about control the z pos of particles over a gradient or smt like this. bout don't know how.. and maybe its bullshit too.
or is there a script / plugin for things like this?

    Hey Jonas

I have done a few of these before.
Used particle system driven by grey scale animated map. Which were driven by sound in after effects.
A bit crazy today, but if I have time this week end I'll see if I can dig up one of the max files.

As a quick start you can use this

Files are on backup. So just threw this together based on one of the orbaz tutorial files.
Should be pretty easy to understand, but if you have any questions, let me know.

Saved it as a max 2013 file

im not sure if its useful in this case but there has been an audio based animation controller in max since forever.

I'm pretty sure that audio controller only works on real-time input and doesn't work with an audio file...

The audio controller works perfectly with audio files.
It would not work for what Jonas needs though, his example is more like a pin-screen animation. The visuals that drive the pin-screen would be driven by audio.
They could be setup in max, using audio controllers to drive noise maps, gradients etc. but would be needlessly complex vs setting them up in something like after effects.
I have done many setups that do use the audio controller for graphic equalizer type animations directly in max.

oh that looks interesting... i haven't looked at this for a long time. I'm pretty sure it used to be only real-time... though that could have been 10 years ago that i last looked.

Fantastic! thank you very much Gavin! really appreciate it!!
and Ja as Gavin said, i also thought on the audio controller, but for setting up a choreographie it would be a hell of work for a simple animation..
