  • Maxscript for finding specific bitmap

My Maxscript skills are pretty limited, and I'm wondering if there is a way to load a particular bitmap into a slot in the compact material editor, or even the slate editor.

The problem I'm dealing with is the dreaded Vray error:

warning: Texture "Map#38" returned an invalid bump normal (XYZ -1.#IND. blah blah blah"

How do I find Map#38 in a scene with hundreds of materials and possibly thousands of texture maps?

    try the zorb script.

it will allow you to select all objects with a "normal map" or any other type of map.

Did you get this to work? Same issue here.

I was able to use the slate editors search function to find mine.

I don't think its really the map, but the geometry it's applied to. It seems like there are wacky surface normals that are causing the bitmaps to behave badly. Usually applying a Reset Xform will fix the problem. Or creating a simple box and attaching the offending object. For me the problem shows up with downloaded objects from sites like Turbosquid or Evermotion. I'm just grasping at straws here, but I'm guessing maybe the models are created in Maya or Blender and then imported into Max. And the resulting geometry is a little messed up. That's my non-technical, grasping at straws, and could be completely wrong explanation.

So I find the bitmap that VRay reports as invalid, then find the material it is a part of, then find the objects the material is applied to, and then fix the geometry.
