  • Laptop for work, or am I crazy

Occasionally (a few times a year) in between free lancing I get a job I can do at home.
I currently have a dell studio laptop at home that is about 6 years old am thinking of getting a new laptop
I could also use a machine that I could do these few jobs I get offered.

I am kind of up to date of hardware for desktops but have no idea about where high spec laptops fit in the picture.

Was wondering what people think of the idea of a high end laptop for work and if anyone has any suggestions for what type of hardware to buy?

    Cheers
    Pat

I was on vacation a month ago, used my MacBook Pro and Chrome Remote Desktop, to remotely access my office workstation. I was even on 4G and it worked flawlessly. I was using a Chromebook to do this, but the screen resolution was poor, so I purchased the Retina MacBook Pro. Just a thought.

It really depends on what you need.
        I use a Fujitsu H730 with i7 4910MQ processor, 32GB ram and a Quadro K2100M graphics card.
I have yet to struggle on a job with it, I render mainly on Rebus.

Thanks for the link to the sager laptops. Hadn't heard of them before and will definitely check them out.

The jobs tend to be stills or simple animations and I was planning on using a cloud service to render the final images. Good to know that there are people out there working on laptops would prefer not to have a desktop taking up space.

Love the whole teamviewer from a laptop into another machine idea, a computer inside a computer, very matrix

Hadn't considered a macbook, could dual boot it hmmm... lots to investigate.

I have an Alienware, this is my second one and I love it....very powerful and way lighter than my previous one.
I'm working mainly on my laptop and I have a 4 rendernodes plus a workstation, I like the fact that I can work from anywhere and this makes the daily basis routine more pleasant.

The ability to sit out the back of my house if the sun is shining making the daily routine more pleasant is my main idea with purchasing a laptop over a desktop.

There are some interesting options out there
                this ones available right now

and this mad one will be sometime soon.

I have using used Dell workstations bought on Ebay (I'm on my 2nd). It's been great....M4700 is my current model and I use my older machines for a in-house render farm and Rebus as needed. It's great for freelance Life.....as you never know when deadlines will appear in your travels... Case in point I was in rural Canada camping/fixing up an old cottage and I got a call for a big job. The attached image was our makeshift kitchen/workspace...even worked in the rain!

I think I must be the odd person out here. Most of the work I do is almost impossible on a laptop without spending upwards of $4k USD or more. I've gone the route of just using team viewer in combination with my surface pro 3 (work demo) and it has been surprisingly nice. I can do all my heavy lifting on my workstation at home or work and just use the surface to show what's going on. It is a little claustrophobic when I'm used to having 3 monitors @home / office...so that's probably why I don't prefer spending the money on a laptop. I'm just not as productive. O_o

Last 3 laptops purchased used from ebay died within 3 months or arrived DOA. I have given up hope for used computer hardware. I can build a better / cheaper computer than what I can buy from EBay anyways!

You can new (refurbished ) .... in this category you could find computer that were returned without even being used..... they still have warranty from the manufacturer for a very good price.
