I can imagine that relinquishing your fate to forces beyond your control would be difficult to do all the time, but I also think it's sage advice not to worry about everything. Accepting you can't control the world is probably one of the sanest things anyone can do! So I certainly don't disagree.

But yeah, I don't think this is the best place for a theological debate

Back to the original question. It seem that the consensus is to, try not to lock yourself into long term commitments.

Jip, plus you never know how fussy they will become. Before you know it, you might not have any control over the creative process and instead of being a great 3D artist, you may become a glorified CAD operator.
Not saying it will be like that, but you never know.

In my view you have a good thing going now working for yourself. Maybe as a test, try and get 1 or 2 projects from that BIG client that has 20 or 30 a month, and see how you feel after that.
