  • You wouldn't believe these are photos

I used to say "you wouldn't believe these are renderings".

I was doing research on product photography vs 3D product visualization, and I have to say I'm surprised about how the photography industry is still live and kicking in terms of product visualization for ads.

    Check this out:

    Those photos...they look like renderings!

Does anyone know how popular are renderings among advertising agencies to show products?

CG artists are looking for photorealism, adding imperfections to looks even more realistic and on the other hand photographers looking for very CG look...."the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence"
    show me the money!!

Very popular. Mostly for cosmetics, perfumes, jewellery, beverages. At least that is what I have done so far.

It's not clear to me what makes them choose one or the other (photography vs. render). If they already have the product, why not just use a photographer?

in case of ikea its much more expensive to build the kitchen and prepare them for the photographer than rendering...
cause they need for the different markets on the planet different kitchens... most stuff you see in an inkea katalog is rendered with vray...

Yes, they have their own team of CG artists I think.

But Kosso mentioned cosmetics, perfumes, jewelry and beverages.
Why would they hire him and not a photographer? It's kind of a mystery to me.
Unless the actual product is manufactured very poorly in a way that it'd look better modeled in 3D...

That is very often the case. You have to put much more work and effort into the photo to get it into the hyperreal and clean look. Much easier when rendered. Also, it is easier to make adaptions for different languages and markets (labels in other language, different taste, different ingredients for example)
