Is there any speed benefits in using RT CPU instead of progressive or adaptive? RT Open GL or CUDA is doggy on my GTX 970, so I am stuck using CPU, however, I am not seeing any speed increase.

I'm busy with the same transition and experimentation and it seems dependant on scene. For exaxmple using adv progressive cleaned up an image nicer and faster than defaults with DMC. Usually traditional way is faster but in this case it was the other way around for me. For RT, I'm not sure what the point is of CPU, becasue we have advanced. But with RT GPU I do see some some potential. On initial tests I'm getting good results, but in general you can't do a side by side comparision with RT GPU and your typical adv dmc cpu render because that would depend on your CPU in your machine. I do see GPU taking over very soon even though there are still some minor limitations. Early adopters will just adjust their workflow to overcome the limitations, just like we've done since the days of XT computers with only 640KB ram and amber 14" screens. Ah those were the days. My 1st HDD was a MFM 20MB (yes megabytes).

What sort of issues are you getting with your GTX 970? I only have a GTX 670 4GB at the moment and my issues was mostly between the keybaord and the chair and getting use to the workflow. Your signature says you have a TITAN 12GB now, you lucky fish. That should be performing well I'd think

Tomasz put together a nice read about their system they've built. Check it out here:

RT CPU won't be faster, should be roughly the same. What issues do you have with RT GPU ? Have you checked http://docs.chaosgroup.com/plugins/s.../view/10390214 ?

the point of RT cpu is that it can be used interactively in the activeshade window. vray advanced cannot. it was never designed as a replacement production renderer. in my experience with all the vray adv optimisations we have now its a bit faster than rt cpu.

rt gpu is finding its way as a production renderer now, but (as the RT in the name suggests) both were originally designed to speed up look dev, not as production renderers.

and the titan X will not be majorly faster than the 970.. its "only" 2x faster than the 670. it has more ram, thats the big thing. id imagine speedwise it will be comparable or even slightly slower than your new 36 core monster..

V-Ray RT CPU vs. Progressive is simply that RT is interactive?

In 3ds Max they are slightly different so there are few more differences - mainly support for some 3rd party plugins could miss in RT CPU, but mostly they are very much alike. In Maya for example, RT and Adv are the same and the only difference is the interactivity, yes.

RT GPU is completely different code base written from scratch to run well on GPU hardware and produce results as close as possible to the CPU versions.

So in Maya RT and Adv are the same? can we get this in Max please?
