Yeah, it's a bit traumatic the first time you have to do this. You will have much more confidence afterwards. Turn legacy boot mode off and double check secure boot is enabled. Once you've created your bootable win 10 flash drive, it will automatically start from it when you plug it in. Then choose your language, select install Windows, do a custom install, select and delete any existing partitions, then click next and windows will install. A flash drive is about 5 x faster than installing from a DVD, plus is always handy to have in the future.

Once you've been through the windows setup wizards and logged in with your Microsoft account, type in windows update into Cortana and check for updates. Let the updates install and restart. Then install the latest nvidia driver from nvidia. Check windows device manager than everything has been installed and has drivers.

Then you'll be all done. A good time to type create restore point into Cortana and create a restore point! Then install your software Benjamin

That's one thing they didn't do is create a restore point. I guess that, that is the first thing I should have done, too. Anyway, thanks for the assistance.

You're welcome Bobby. Restore points are a gray area now... they used to be created automatically in windows 7, then only with installs in Windows 8 and 8.1. In Windows 10 they have been deprecated and are only created rarely. Microsoft say that this is to reduced the performance and space penalty of using them... I've never really had performance problems myself though. Also appreciate that a system restore can only get you out of trouble in a specific set of circumstances. Having a system image on a fast usb 3 disk, and using Windows file history can get you out of any problem. And there is no substitute to having current and tested off site backups (I remember you posting in a previous thread that you use carbonite). All the best Benjamin

Yes, I have all project files on the external hard drive and Carbonite. I'm scanning the external for viruses now, so we'll see if that was the issue.

Boot drive created, partitions deleted, and custom install is running. So far, so good.

In the 90's I managed a 100+ architectural firm's technology. I would build all the machines exactly the same, with all the same hardware and software, and I had the hard drive in a swappable bay. If a machine went down, I was just swap. I guess, it's a poor mans restore point . Everyone had their own hard drive for personal stuff and of coarse, network drives. The swappable was just programs and O/S. I might just do the same now, it was successful then.
