  • It so gets to me when clients says...

Is there a "Sheen" on this object, no? please add it.

I've heard this too many times, I actually looked it up, there is no parameter ever that's called a "sheen", I think they mean anisotropy? but I'm not sure...

I had the exact same thing happen to me. Some wise guy here cut/pasted a picture of Charlie Sheen on my roof. I told my client sure, however, I'll have to move the sun around to hit the roof just right, he said, "no, we studied things very much and we know exactly where we want the sun, so don't move it".

Not anisotropy, more a shine like on a waxed table or a wall in the kitchen that isn't flat since it would be difficult to clean it.

to me, id immediately assume they want a soft glossy highlight on it. if its a flat surface/still image, ill usually just paint one in in photoshop.

That term is used quite a bit here and its generally means a soft glossy highlight.
                      Cheers,

It will be a long meeting if you expect your client to use Max specific terms. Sheen is a common descriptor. A quick Google search should give you enough information on what they are asking for.

                        sheen
                        SHēn/Submit
                        noun
                        1.
a soft luster on a surface.
"black crushed velvet with a slight sheen"
synonyms: shine, luster, gloss, patina, shininess, burnish, polish, shimmer, brilliance, radiance
"we were admiring the sheen of your dog's coat"
                        verbliterary
                        1.
shine or cause to shine softly.
"men entered with rain sheening their steel helms"

From my experience working with retail designers, what they mean is "shellac" with a soft undermat.

Just out of my head, "sheen" is an attribute you will find in PRMan shaders where it's usually used when doing cloth type of material.

"An additional grazing-angle component (primarily for cloth.....)"

                            https://renderman.pixar.com/resource...LMDiffuse.html

                            https://renderman.pixar.com/resource...PxrDisney.html

But honestly, your client may refers the term to what others already mentioned in this thread.
                            always curious...

Sheen is not a subjective term. It has an actual definition that is found in the dictionary.
