  • 3dsMax 2014 + BackBurner error, cannot use VRay DR

    Hey guys,
after many years of CG, as usual Backburner is still causing a lot of problems to me...
I can't use VRay DR because I can't run and complete a proper BackBurner job on my workstation (3ds Max 2014).
This is not the first time I setup distributed rendering network, but this time I really can't find a solution.

I run both BB Manager and Server on the same machine, with Administration rights. They both connect fine, as the Backburner Queue Monitor reports. Then from 3ds Max I send a job with a very simple scene, rendering with the base scanline render.

Then the Server fails with the usual error message:
Adapter returned unexpected code: -2 for ...
Application load error: 3ds Max adapter error: Pipe ended. : 109 ...

    The Max.log reports:
    Code:
    2016/04/19 17:11:37 DBG: [11504] [11508] Starting network

    2016/04/19 17:11:37 DBG: [11504] [11508] Stop network
Can't figure and find the problem... paths are valid, file are accessible, permissions are OK...
    do you have any suggestion?
    Thanks!

    VRay DR isn't using BB.
Its options are in the last pane before render elements.

Thanks Gregvfx, I know about VRAy DR but if you have a look at the documentation about its setup, you'll read:

If you see the a 3ds Max window flashing on the taskbar and then disappearing, right-click on the V-Ray DR spawner icon in the taskbar tray, select exit to close the DR spawner, and try running a regular Backburner job with this machine as the server. After that, try to start the V-Ray DR spawner again.

Infact my DR is not working, I assume that's because I never run and completed a BackBurner job on this machine.

I am using 24 render nodes + my workstation with Vray for DR, and I never had to configure the host as a BB server... but maybe I don't understand you fully.
It is true that the nodes used as satellites are servers only. I find the documentation of BB very poor but it works.

If memory serves me correctly Max 2014 has an issue with backburner from the Max installer. You might need to install it from the standalone installer.

Thanks VelvetElvis, you nailed it! I reinstalled BB 2014 from that link, successfully completed a BB job and now VRay DR is working great. Thanks!
