  • Can't remove XRef Object file

I don't really use XRef objects in my projects, but today thought I'd give it a try. I attached the scene and it came in OK I think. However, I now want to detach it, ie Remove the XRef Record. When I do this, nothing seems to happen - I cannot remove the XRef.

    Any ideas?
    Kind Regards,
    Richard Birket

I too came across this. Tried the suggestions - it just froze 3dsmax.

Guess merging what you need in a new scene might be the only option left then, your scene's probably corrupted :/

Mmm. That's what I was worried about. Sadly, we use file-linking from Autocad into Max which is a great way to work until something like this happens. As soon as you merge/bind the scene in, the file-link is broken meaning updates in Autocad aren't easy to bring through.

          Oh well.....

Soemtimes it helps to delete the XRef entries in the lower part of the list in the XRef window. Sometimes merging the XRef to the scene and then delete it does the job. Yesterday I found, that there soemtimes are tiny red crosses at the instering point of these XRefs. Try to delete it and the XRef entry is also gone. Autodesk programmers should add a message window where the cause is listed why the XRef can not be deleted. I have this problem very often, especially when I use older scenes with newer versions of MAX.

We still have this issue. Anyone have an updated idea on removing them? Does anyone actually use xref objects these days?
                Kind Regards,

Yeah use them a lot. I rarely have the undeletable Xref object problem though. And if I had one couldn't find a common thread when it happens.

If you have that problem than try closing your VFB. I have troubles deleting sometimes if the VFB is open. Problems disappear when closing the VFB.
