How long is it taking for you to toggle using the Hide by Category? If I want to isolate my camera, or lights, it is taking 20-30 seconds. Also, is anyone finding it imposable to select the new Physical Camera? I can pick 100 times, and I just can't select it. I have to isolate or go to my layer manger.

I am sure it is scene specific.

most of my project are about the same size and complexity, but they are getting larger. I need to turn that poly count on.

Just to add to this if you don't know it already one of the handiest shortcut keys in max is
            shift+G for geo
            shift+C camera
            shift +L for lights etc

It's always instantaneous for me, even on huge scenes.

Why don't simply use the selection filter ?

Mainly, I use it to isolate all the cameras or all the lights. If I need to select the active camera, I do right mouse click.

Bobby, this is just a stream-of-consciousness post...hopefully it might be of some use to you...

In general, it is probably good to remember that applications like 3DS Max are very much made up of multiple databases. Anything that causes the program to parse entire multiple large databases will take time, especially specialty-style commands like Hide By Category. 3DS Max has basic keyboard-based tools to hide and reveal Cameras and Lights specifically like alt/C for cameras and alt/L for lights (at least on my machine). These are simple and fast and I would recommend using them before other, more specific commands.

So to isolate my lights or camera, I might use two fast commands, first Hide All and then an Alt/C or Alt/L to reveal what I need.

Thinking about it, that's what I used to do...To make it even faster, when I can I make sure I have a Named Selection Set of both my cameras and lights so I can recall them even faster if needed.

And as far as selecting a camera, a right click on the camera's viewport's Camera name for the drop down Select Camera command is a great way to do that.

                    Hopefully this helps you some...

                    -Alan

I wasn't aware of the keyboard shortcuts, I'll sure try it. I read about selection sets twice, in reference to one of rants, so I'll check that out, too. Again, thank you!

Anytime...Heck, with all the complex and excellent ArchViz work you have been doing, I wish I could hang out with you for a spell and try to give you all the 3DS Max shortcuts I have learned over the years like I do with my local 3D buddies here in San Diego...

You could most likely show me a few things as well...
