  • save times for 3dmax are very long

I was having some issues with dragging files to max since upgrading to windows 10 (didn't manage to resolve this issue). I uninstalled max and installed a clean copy. I'm having issues now though where files are taking ages to save. I do not have compress on save on. Any ideas ? Drive is fairly new. File sizes range from 80mb to 500mb but they are all very slow in saving.

When you drag files into Max, it 1st copies the file to the downloads folder in your project folder and only then it opens it. So it doesnt 1st directly open the file. If you're doing this over a network, it could explain the LAG. I generally don't do this because you end up with 2 copies of your file. One in the original location and another in the downloads folder.

Also check if your antivirus security strength isn't so high that it checks the max files with a microscope
    Kind Regards,

The dragging issue is unrelated and is not something I can do since upgrading to windows 10. It's not over a network, all files are local. Prior to re-installing max file save times were fine. The anti-virus software hasn't changed since I re-installed max. I'll try turning off but this has never caused any issues previously.

I turned off "run as administrator" and also turned off "compatibility mode" and I think things are back to normal now.

Just an update as I've had exactly the same issue with long save times again. The issue was having items grouped. It multiplied a 750mb file save time from 10-15 seconds to about 3 mins. Un-grouping everything resolved this.

Ive noticed a big problem with 2016 and grouping, where it can take forever to save or it will just freeze while I'm working and seemingly sit there and do nothing for anywhere from 1min to 30min and then it keeps going as if nothing happened. If all the groupings are ungrouped then it seems to run just fine.

Sounds like groups aren't just a view port issue. I think I may have had similar grouping issues like you too. Not sure if this has been resolved in 3dsmax 2017.

Ive stayed away from 2017, but got the SP3 now and might see if that's improved any. I can tell pretty quick as I have a couple files that I know have problems with groups.
