        Is it doing anything? Mine turns opaque, but maybe not as transparent has 2016. You are right mouse clicking, correct? I just want to make sure we are talking about the same thing.

          Keyboard shortcut for "Display as See-Through Toggle".

          I think some people call it X-Ray Selected.

          It makes the object selected transparent - and my keyboard shortcut for it has been customised (iirc) to ALT+x.

          It simply doesn't work for me in 2017 - in fact, it actually seems to break things (i.e. the toggle gets lost somehow).

                You've helped Bobby, the problem seems to be that my Object Properties default to have their Display Properties set to "By Layer" by default. If I deselect that, and make it "By Object", then things work fine.

                The question now is - how do I set that "By Object / By Layer" to be By Object at start up ?

                Something in the .ini file perhaps ?

                  This is the problem.

                  By default Display Properties / Rendering Control and Motion Blur are all set to "By Layer" for some reason (for all new objects).

                  So everything is greyed out, so making See-Through active is not possible.

                  How can I change this to be "By Object" by default ?

                      Contacted Autodesk and it was to do with my default "Design" settings - here is their reply;

                      "The setting is enabled by default when the “Design” setting is chosen when 3ds Max is first started. There are a couple of ways to change this:

                      Change back to the “Classic” mode using the method described in our blog (http://area.autodesk.com/blogs/max-s...sic-and-design)
                      OR if you prefer the most of the settings of Design but not the Layer option you can change just that option by performing the following:
                      Customize > Custom UI and Defaults Switcher… >
                      Under “Initial settings for tool options:” chose any setting that doesn’t start with “DesignVIZ”"

                      I chose to go into Customize > Custom UI and chose the VRay option in the Defaults Switcher (I thought I'd already done that, but obviously not !).
