This is a tough one. I was in a similar situation last year and it got hairy....
I tried both demos but in the end didn't buy either one because the job was cancelled.
Anything specific you need to do? I personally think Ornatrix might be the best allround solution and Hair Farm and it's hair modeling approach might be a bit more specific in it's strentghs.
Additionally it seems that Ornatrix is still actively being developed while I haven't heard anything new about Hair Farm in terms of advancements in a long while. I might be wrong though.

Hairfarm stopped developing afaik so go for ornatrix. We have both and too many problems with hairfarm that don't get fixed.

Thanks guys! One more thing... is it possible with Ornatrix to groom density without using maps?

I want to say yes but I am not sure. There should be a full featured demo on the Ornatrix website that should let you test it. The only limitation is that you can't save your scene.

              Did you finally choose?

I already have hairfarm and I'm about to buy ornatrix, but I'm not even sure I need it since I just discovered today that the max Hair and Fur combined with vray for shading and rendering and zbrush fibermesh for grooming may have everything I need. After all Zbrush is almost same price as Hairfarm or Ornatrix.

there is also Blender which look amazing for grooming and is free as well as houdini indie (just 200$). and we can import the curves back in max.

Then there's problem of hair sim. If you neeed realistic hair to hair collision, you may need one of the plugins. But look at what can be done with hair and fur alone:

that bear has pretty long hair and if you look at the walk cycle he doesn't seem to need hair to hair collision...
