  • Upgrade CPU and Motherboard. choices choices

I'm trying to decide between the 6700k, 6850k,6900k. I use my system for 3d and games so need it to cater for both. I currently run a i7-4770.

I'm also looking at the MSI X99A XPOWER (LINK).

    Any advice ?
    Regards

I will receive my new system tomorrow with a 6800k
IMHO, the 6850k is not worth the price difference...
The 6700k is older and have only 4cores. And this is not the same socket as the other
If the 6900k is right for your budget, go with it ! otherwise I think the best performance / price goes to the 6800k..

Anyway, I'm not a pro-hardware, a lot of people here are really good for that and they can confirm/invalidate what I said !!!
    (Sorry for my bad english)

Ive been referring to this site: Userbench

It keeps saying that the 6700K is better in terms of gaming performance because of the single core clock speed. It also states that the 6700K is in front by one generation which can't be right surely.

According to that link, the 6900K is overall only 14% faster than the 6700K, but it costs 300% more!!!

For rendering, I would much rather look at a V-Ray rendering bench mark however
        Kind Regards,

I did actually assume that vray and max would utilise cores and threads to their full potential so that's why I was kind of looking at the gaming benchmarks. All the CPUs are quite a bit faster than my i7-4770.

So it seems that Xeons and the new i7 cpus use the same socket. That's pretty good ! I purchased a dual CPU xeon setup ages ago and it really was just very loud and not that fast. I wonder how they compare to dual systems these days ?

Does this mean you can put 2 I7s onto dual socket mobo instead of xeons?

I have one 6900k here, works well, oc to 4ghz and running at the 100% for days at a time without any issue.

That's good to know. I'm ordering this for the new studio so I'm quite excited to see how it will perform.

I don't think the architecture inside the i7 cpu's allows dual sockets. Just a guess though !

yeah can't use i7 in dual....

though i remember have a dual celeron 400mhz back in the day. I think there was only every one motherboard that supported before they locked them down to just p3's.
