  • Roof Ridge

There has to be an easy way to create roof ridges and valleys. I was using the roof displacement script, however, it doesn't work in MAX 2017. Any tips? I would rather not rely on 3rd party plugins, unless it is a plug-in that is known for being current.

I usually keep the previous version of max for some time to make sure that all my plug-ins work correctly. I would go to 2016 ... made your roof and open it in 2017 instead to try to discover the wheel.

I don't do much roofs, but when I need to I use ATILES Pro : http://www.avizstudio.com/tools/atiles/
It's a script, so less likely to brake with a new version of 3ds max. It's cheap, and it works very well.
Now, for very large roofs it might not cut it as it generates actual 3D geometry.

I looked into that and RailClone does the same thing. I was looking for more of a plane with displacement texture solution, which is how I am doing this roof. Mixing the plane with displacement and RailClone wasn't working for me.

Valleys can be easily created with 3dsmax once you've made the basic shape of your roof. (Chamfer)
The Rooftiles itself are easy too with RailClone, didn't I send you my shingle roof preset?
The Ridge depends on what kind of roof it is. I recorded a video here with a shingle roof, finished with a copper ridge for example. Could've been done with tiles too but with railclone then.

(I'm struggling a bit with Max here, because the recording slows my computer a lot and I had to resize my window too because Snagit doesn't want to record a resolution bigger than 1080p. Also I failed at the valley (where they come together, you'll see why but I doesn't matter you don't see it anyway. I should've just cut the top instead of deleting but whatever you'll get the point hopefully )
