2. I can't ALT+CLICK to quickly select the layer under my cursor.

I found out you can actually do this! The key combo is Ctrl+Click. If you just click without holding Ctrl, you will select the whole group which the layer belongs to. If the layer doesn't belong to any group, you select it right away with or without holding Ctrl.
