  • Snowy (and not) pine trees

    Hello !
So in this thread http://forums.chaosgroup.com/showthr...esthouse/page2 guys asked me to do a library of snowy pine trees.
Since i've done only one tree for that project and i even forgot where are the sources - i've done first take from scratch.
You can see the result in attachment. Height if this tree is about 3 meters. I plan to do about 12 trees with 1 meter difference each, also about 3-4 young trees from 1 meter to 2 meters high.
If you have any ideas of types of trees you wish to have in this pack - let me know, i can do them also (i think)
This is fast preview render of first tree from all sides.
I am not making these for closeups, here distance to camera is 12 meters.
I will make a scene with some environment for this to see how trees fit in something real.
Let me know what you think !

Also i've developed steady workflow for snow creation. If you need anything complex covered with snow - let me know, i can help with that

    Hello Oleg ! Great news

    My comments :

    - On the first tree, the top o f the tree look "trimmed". Probably not but usually it's more "pointy"

    - I'm not a fan of the snow on the bottom of the trunk, but maybe it's realistic

    - Try to avoid snow "pack" that look like tubes, the image in the other post was almost perfect. Either you have a big thickness of snow but then the tree is completely covered and you barely notice the green of the tree, either you have more a thinner amount of snow (which I prefer, and which is more usable, but also probably harder to do in 3D) but then it's more noisy, less "packy"

    - Also on the other image, you had some feeling of the weight of the snow, that was excellent. Don't over do it though.

Making trees of various heights is a great idea, try to go as high as possible (15m) because we often need bigger trees and scaling has his limits!

I am creating snow with particles, because there is a lot of planes here with needles textures at random angles. It will take ages for this plugin to compile geometry of snow on a tree like this. Also i have realistic behaviour because particles are behaving themselves like real snow, accumulating on large surfaces.

Thanks a lot for your observations. Once I will achieve correct look of this template - other trees will be easy and fast to create. You know that feeling when you've done a thing once, did not save sources and it is hard to reproduce it
            Anyway, updates coming soon!

I agree that the snow in your original image looks better than what you have here. If you considering creating a library of snow covered pines for sale may I suggest.

Maybe 3 age/size ranges and a few iterations of each?

Snow as User adjustable vray material.

Possibly a small, med and large amount of snow as variations? Or perhaps just two variations of snow depth.

There are a few individual and several very nice and extensive sets of snow covered pines for sale on turbo squid as comparison/reference.

Thanks for comments, I am working on correcting these things. Also it is a good idea about creating different amount of snow, will consider that.
Also yes, my idea was to create several different aged trees with iterations.
I like those trees, they look awesome! Thanks for pointing on them. I think I've created mine from that image checking these turbosquid trees as reference, as I've created them some time ago for another project, that's why I don't have sources and there is actually only one tree )
Anyway, thanks for support, I'm working on another iteration.

So holidays passed and i have another iteration of trees.
First is 7m high and second is 12m high.
I used Vlado for scale, and looks like he likes them !
Both are full of snow - i will make less snow version a bit later, after i finish these iterations.
I plan to make 20 trees of different height. Each will have 2 different snow amount - low and high.
Trees are quite heavy in polycount (2M+) , but i don't think that nowadays it is a problem.

Yeah he couldn't believe it was CG tree and tried to shake one branch. So he got what he asked for

First take on low amount of snow of the 7m high tree.

I know, if it wasn't a snow scene, I would have been afraid that he had been attacked by a giant seagull!

(I have actually seen it happen)
