  • Folder structure pipeline

The folder structure at my new job is a mess.
Am trying to finalize and migrate to a new structure and have 2 options.
The new structure needs to be scalable as we are a growing company and for our particular needs we are trying to model the whole world in 3D (big ambitions not sure if we will get there but we are trying to think that way)

We work on arch viz and civil engineering projects but the logic would apply anywhere.

Site Name (place/location or asset name)
    Process (modelling/lighting etc)

    Option 1
    Client/Project/Site/Department/Process

    Option 2
    Client/Project/Department/Process/Site

Option 1 emphasizes content higher up the folder tree and
Option 2 emphasized department and process higher up the tree

I know from my time working on movies thats the general vfx's pipe is something like
/root/project/sequence/shot/dept/process/software/ which would seem to be more in line with option 1 (client=project sequence=project and shot = site)

and in general most arch viz places tend to be more towards option 2

Just wondering what other people have done and if they have any opinions on the options above.

    Cheers,

    Patrick

Really good book that gives an in-depth look at questions about building a future proof scalable pipeline
