  • anyone got Windows 10 memory problems ?

Since upgrading to Windows 10 ive noticed major problems on all my 8 computers. They just seem to run out of memory when rendering in 3dsMax. Its not about the project complexity - im running out of memory on projects that i used to have no problems with on Win7. Windows pops up with a message saying the PC is out of memory and it shuts down Max automatically, or Max just crashes (rendering with Vray).
Anyone else seeing this problem ? I havent yet found time to revert back to Win7 but looks like that might have to be an option.....

Have you tried increasing the size of the page file?

I've tried increasing it. I've tried decreasing it. Ive also tried talking to it in a very respectful, but firm voice. none of that works.
Ive heard it recommended that the page file should be double the size of your ram. Ive also heard it said that is a terrible idea as your computer will use the page file instead of your ram (assuming you have plenty of ram). Anyhow, it is a bit of a nightmare. I have some spare time this week so i will post some vray error messages (assuming i can repeat the error now that i want to

Does the render run out of ram rightaway or after few feames, does the rendering work on older vray builds?
You should check that its not some kind of memory leak. What render manager do you use? Some like deadline have ability to cache data between frames, it could be a fault there. Lastly can you render in your max ui sequentially or it also crashes?

Try disabling EMBREE or also tick "Conserve Memory" in Render Settings

it runs out of memory right away - im not rendering frames - just single still image for print. The embree options havent helped. Thing is i never had this problem in Win7. This screenshot is a typical example of the result. As the process begins, you can see gradually the available system ram goes down as you would expect since max is using it. The available ram goes all the way down to something like 4 or 5Mb. Then Max (or Vray) crashes. Immediately the available ram goes up, and thats what you see in the screenshot (I was unable to capture it before the crash)

Hmm I thought tou have 32gb of ram, but screen shot shows 16? Could it be just high res image is requiering more ram? Does it render in small res?

Alternativly you can send me your scene and I can do some debug/troubleshoot.

I did the OS reinstall - things got wierd - so i got onto Dell to help (its an Alienware 17 R2). They now tell me they are going to install a new video card (which is physically integrated with the motherboard). I dont know if that has anything to do with anything - im not even sure if its necessary - but anyhow i am hoping after that is done + the re-install then this beast of a laptop will start working again as a mobile workstation (like it used to)
