  • anyone with 4k monitor?

I'm thinking about getting 4k DELL 27" P2715Q but I'm not sure how 3dsamx UI, ZBrush etc will be readable. If anyone have any experience with 4k screens for CGI work and can chime in? I would really appreciate it.

You would be better of if u get 34Inch Ultra wide from Dell. I have one and its crazy how much better it is to have 1 wide screen than 2 next to each other. Also 4k pixels.. a lot of GPU power to support this + ram/cpu.

The UI of 3ds Max 2017 works fine on high DPI monitors, older versions are not really usable as everything is too tiny. Not sure about ZBrush.

I love having a 4k display but the viewport functionality in 3dsmax 2017 is absolutely terrible for me if I have multiple viewports open. 99% of the time I work in a single viewport so it isn't a huge issue. Incidentally, I don't see this behavior in any other 3d application, just max. Even low-end tools like ZModeler3 don't have this issue. Houdini, no problem. ZBrush works great for me in 4k.

I use a 750ti for my viewport most of the time and typically use my bigger GPUs for rendering. Even when I plug my display into a GTX 1080, max multiple viewport performance is dreadful.

The other thing to know is that a lot of legacy apps you have won't be high dpi aware. Using old versions of Photoshop, etc. can be annoying. Some legacy apps exhibit super tiny menus, some display with blurry text. Overall though, 4k is worth it for me. The extra resolution is just so nice.

you're right regarding power. But I'm somehow not sure about curved monitors ( I need to be sure that the lines are straight in my models very often . Also dropping applications or windows in full screen on one or another monitor is very nice, I don't think using this "dell screen layouts" is the same thing.

I'm not using Dell Layout. Just windows, You drag it to edge of screen and u have 50% app, then right edge u have 50% second app. THe 50% is around 3/4 of size of normal Screen. U losing few cms.

I never have 1 app maximized. Usually just 2 halfs. Like 3d + material manager.

I have attached my wide screen here :Click image for larger version

            Atm my setup is
            27 Standard, < VFB maximized
34 Ultra Wide Dell < 3d App + node editor
            27 Standard < refs/net/etc

Super somfy to work. It really makes difference having 1 ultra wide instead of 2 next to each other. The lack of screen edge and all that is insane once u start working on it.

Curvature wise. Well since ur model will only take around 15-20% of ur monitor space... I dont think u will notice curve. Then again it depends on brands. Each brand curve is different. Dells one is very subtle. I don't ever notice them unless I'm maxed out... < super rare.

PS. there are a NON curved 34 inch ultra wide monitors too. U can get straight if u want.

but you still got 2 other monitors I'm thinking about going 27 triple instead of this 4k.

Im running dual 4k (P2715Q) and some LG monitor on a single gtx 1080. It works but there is a very slight delay (not latency) with max orbiting/panning. Other than that, 60hz and I can play 1080 youtube, work in PS, AFX etc. with no problems. Lately I've been using the second monitor for 4k RT GPU look dev on product renders. I have to shrink the max program on the first monitor so I can navigate the camera in viewport - maximized doesn't update smoothly. Looks so nice at 100% on a dedicated 4k monitor.

I was an early 4K adopter. it work fine, but I am not sure there is any benefits. Maybe side-by-side, but without comparing it, I am not sure it's that much better. Anything before MAX 2017 will not scale.

I bought a Dell P2715Q, I was happy at first but working in max 2016 is just impossible unless you want to be blind. Didn't test max 2017 on it. For me the best setup quality price is a dual, or triple Dell Ultrasharp U2515H. Cheap, good resolution that won't break your eyes.
                      Didn't try those 34" 16/10 though.

For me 1440p on 25" is perfect, but that obviously my comfort zone.

hmmm triple 25 1440p might really be sweet spot. I tested one 27" 1440 dell and I had a feeling that in triple setup it might be harsh for my neck

Well 3x 25 would already take some serous space, so triple 27.... 3x25 1440p seems better.

GW has a 3x25" setup I think, so you get an idea.. You can see it on his Instagram page https://www.instagram.com/mastering_cgi/
