Most people I know, like myself, use GMAIL. I use the webmail, however, I spend far too much time looking for emails; GMAIL likes to hide things. Is anyone else using GMAIL and using another client to pull it? I thought about Outlook, but I haven't tried.

I've used Thunderbird email for years. Works fine with Gmail, easy to set up.

What are the benefits of using Thunderbird over GMAIL's webmail?

Thunderbird is a local mail client - it will PULL the email from the remote email server (GMAIL's) and store a copy of it locally in your user profile. You can then organise your email via scripts (name, year, from, to, subject etc...many combinations) move them to different folders, make back-ups etc.
Your Gmail will still be on the gmail server- the webmail browser interface you are using now, just allows you to peek into the gmail server.
You can PULL multiple email accounts -gmails, domain (bobby@bobby-parker.com) although you'd need this set up if you don't have it already, thunderbird won't give you this, but will just let you collect all the mail together and view it through one opensource FREE app. It also has calendars that will sync with gmail, plus other plug-ins to do other stuff.
+1 been using it for years.

I used it ages ago, but that was way before GMAIL. I'll check it out.

recommend syncing thunderbird with gmail. keeps contacts and messages backed up and "in the cloud" so accessible from anywhere. It will likely take you a bit of time to go thru the t-bird settings but once you get it set up I think you will like it. you can set up an email signature and forwarding and reply behavior choices.

One setting to for sure look at is how t-bird, by default, deletes messages after a certain amount of time. It can be set up on an individual folder basis, but as I recall, the delete messages can be turned off globaly, which is what I did.

I use t-bird on my desktop/workstation. On my iphone and ipad I use the built in Mail. All synced to/thru gmail.

Outlook is just a big bloated hassle imho. I use T-bird to avoid all that. Same with MS Office. Try out Apache Open Office - free and way less hassle. let's you do want you want to do versus all the bloatware. hope this is helpful

What is gmail hiding? I use gmail all the time through the browser without issue. In the past when I was freelancing, I would setup labels for jobs, so any email from a certain company would get filed correctly. But I've usually found most emails through the search bar at the top.

I like to keep my email inbox empty, so I file things right away. I have over 100 project folders, but the way it strings things together gets me in trouble. I might get a reply to something I don't care about, so I'll delete it, but it has also deleted the entire thread. I don't delete my junk mail, so most of the times I can find it, but sometimes not. I know on my phone it asks if I want to always file an email from that person, but on the web I don't think it does and I have no clue how to change it. I few other things bug me too.

To be honest never used any client for Gmail. About a year ago (or more) I switched for Inbox for Gmail. Cannot be more happy - it sorts everything and groups all e-mails. Very easy to use and just perfect for me.
                    Available for remote work.

I know what you mean about the Gmail threads. No problem with Thunderbird to file into folders and keep a clean inbox. You can keep the inbox unthreaded and just delete the ones you want.

You can deactivate the conversation view in the Gmail web client, which gives you the classic view, with newest emails on top as they arrive. That way, no danger of accidentally deleting an entire conversation.
Also, Gmail has one of the most powerful search tools around. It's really worth learning some of the syntax and you'll never lose anything again.

Gmail has a feature "delete this message" on the right arrow pulldown menu. If you go to the specific message on the conversation thread and select "delete this message", then only that message is deleted.

Last night I had a banquet to go to and again, GMAIL got in the way from finding things. All day I got emailed pertaining to the banquet, however, after a 10-minute search, I couldn't find one of the emails. I think the problem is that whole nesting emails together, which doesn't allow you to see the email subject lines. Each follows up goes one level deeper and if someone breaks the email chain, with a new email, then your conversation now get's separated. If you have a couple people go rogue, then things get buried.
