I just got myself an AMD Ryzen 7 1700. It does an amazing job with Max/VRay. VRay benchmark is 1:19. But... am I imagining things, or is this chip terrible with AfterEffects?

What are you doing with AfterEffects?

Just some motion graphics work with some particularly heavy comps. It's possible that it's a RAM issue. The computer I want to retire has 32 gigs, this new one only 16. But I'm using only SSD drives on the new one, and the old one (i7 4900MQ) renders this comp almost twice as fast.

What's the CPU usage like? Does it help if you restrict AE to run on fewer cores?

Just check the memory usage with Task Manager.
If the new computer fills the 16 GB, then it could slows down the processing. Compare the same to the old computer. How high is the RAM usage there ?
If the old computer (32GB) uses more than 16gb ram, then the new one (16GB) has to swap to hard disk.

          Kind regards
          Alex

Not sure this has anything to do with it but AE has a memory leak at the moment. If you don't set the memory usage to fairly low the system starts to get very sluggish.

More RAM will arrive Wednesday. I'll do some testing and report back later.
