Blender does have a modifier stack with a lot of modifiers to choose from. It's pretty much like Max. However it doesn't have the feature of saving a snapshot of the mesh in the stack as in Max via an edit poly/edit mesh modifier. I heard that there's an addon that kind of provides a similar thing. Another workaround is to keep copies of your meshes in a separate hidden layer.

Houdini also has a stack. It's actually node based rather than a stack. I'm not sure how good Houdini is at archvis though. I've not seen a lot of this type of work done with it but I read somewhere that they are going to be making their software a bit more general purpose and not so VFX focused so to speak so with the next versions things might be changing for Houdini.

Houdini sounds good as long as you don't have revenue more than $100,000 which include any expenses and taxes. Revenue less than $100,000 is kinda same as working at home alone at around $40/hr as net income.

      $4,495 + $2,495/year is not something I can afford.
If you want floating, it is $6,995 + $4,995/year.
