  • Arnold to go rental only - AD losing their marbles

    http://cgpress.org/archives/arnold-t...ntal-only.html

More rental madness from AD...no no no!

It isn't the rental that is the problem (if it was an option) it is the crazy prices...CRAZY!

Luckily WE don't to worry because we chose the best Renderer company to give our money too....Love you ChaosGroup x

bad for freelancer that would like to work the whole year with Arnold yes...
but if you need it only for one job renting is a good option...
or if you are a big studio with houdini, katana and maya in the piple it isnt that bad...

i agree to have both options (own/rent) would be best...

Rental only is the most bullshit decision one can make if you're not doing it for the money. It is anything besides consumer friendly.

Wondering how this will impact the Arnold userbase. I can see autodesk getting away with it with 3ds max / maya because it is not so easy to switch applications but a render engine?
      Cheers,

What a "surprise"! Everything that Autodesk touches turns to s**t.

This whole everything going rental may shake up the industry. Even big ass VFX firms are operating on 1-2% profit margins so how the hell can even they afford this stuff year after year? It's going to come to a breaking point here before we know it. At least you save $180 if you buy a year's worth of sub on this.

Rentals only work if it, like Adobe, takes 2-3 years of renting to cover the cost of 1 perpetual license. When you cover the cost of a perpetual license in a year or so, then it's just a money grab.

The problem with AD is they are greedy, I just renewed my 2 seats of max at just over CDN$800/seat/year and that is a HUGE difference to the almost CDN$3000/seat/year it would cost per year on the "rental" program. Thus why Im going to be looking at learning different software or change careers altogether.

Autodesk, the money focused, customer unfocused company. Take a leaf out of Pixologic's book!

Is that the case ? I thought they listened to customers quite openly and added some amazing features. Also, they don't charge for updates.

I remember paying three years for a few AD estimating seats that were not updated over the three years, so I canceled my maintenance just to find out that AD never had plans on supporting it and stopped development soon after. Then, it was shocking how they could rip me off, just to find out years later that this will be their mode of operations. I guess now they are calling it a lease. The dust will settle and leasing software will be the cost of doing business. For me, it almost doesn't matter. Paying quarterly cost a little more, however, it's all a tax deduction. They'll probably come to a point when they stop developing their software and spend their time counting their beans. I am sure some money will be for research and development, but I think the software as reached its maturity.
