Grass and dirt

We need to create realistic grass and dirt for our animations and stills does wnayone one no the best method to do this without using vray displacment ?

you could try looking at Darktree's simbiont plugin but dont think it will be very realistic if viewed close up, there are plents ot tuts on doing modelling grass which could also work,
