I'm looking into buying some new renderslaves, I will probably end on dual Xeon's but I'm not sure about the cache, is 512kb enough? Or do I need 1mb? Does it at all have an influence on the rendertime?

in my experience (we have both Xeons with 512 Kb and 1Mb cache) the amount of cache has very little influence on render time.
You need clockspeed instead, so I would buy a 512 kB Xeon with a higher speed for the same price...
on the other hand the Xeons with 1Mb cache are newer and thus should have possible bug fixes in them...
