Thanks for the tip, I already got that one. It is from the relative beginning of the course, right? Or did he release a new one?

I thought about creating a procedural one from scratch but to be honest I don' think I can achieve the required photorealism with it. Resources are better spent photographing a huge one myself since photo-based texture (especially when you look for something with distinct features) are the more realistic option.

By the way I got along further with the neural network approach:

      1) Using neural-doodle (https://github.com/alexjc/neural-doodle), I got it working on windows 7 with a custom python environment, fixed a few bugs myself (despite having no clue what I am doing, googling, and copy-pasting code worked though) and it's running now and taking quite some time.
It will crash though, I am sure of that, the RAM usage spikes on phase 3 of the calculations (they double basic calculations resolution in every phase) with 1500x1500 to 30GB and my machine "only" has 64GB. SO I don't expect it to pull through but the general approach seems to be working after fiddling with some of the parameters.

      2) Using neural-enhance (https://github.com/alexjc/neural-enhance), I calculated one increasing resolution from 6k to 12k and it definitely does a better job than photoshop. Currently taking that one and doubling it again to 24k. The texture we currently use was made using alienSkin Blowup to get it up to 24k. I will compare results of the neural enhance 24k versus the BlowUp 24k texture and report back.

think they try to create giant textures... and they need some people for beta testing...

Wow that seems to be exactly what I am looking for! Thanks! Already mailed them since on their site they state it's possible for up to 8k which would not be enough. But then again this kind of stuff is special, not your regular guy requesting his 512 texture from 1980 to be upscaled :P.

Nope, it's lesson 11 in the original mastering vray course and comes out roughly like this:

Au, I remember. I'll take alook into it again but as I recall he used bitmaps there, too and I'm not sure how easy it is to adjust. But I'll take a look, thanks!

Maybe something half useful here too? https://www.artstation.com/artist/deepmind - I'd say trying to get something at high res with a wide area covered is going to be a tough one - you'd need enough height and width on the lens. Worth shooting yourself in a few patches and stitching?

I'm learning substance designer on the fly....it's excellent if you really know how to create materials with references... What I suggested was creating a concrete material then 4 variations of that base one and join them together then you could use another tool to eliminate the seams.

They have a free library if you have their subscription (rent to buy) ...you could download 30 assets a month for free.

You could mix 2-4 smaller textures, or even the one with offsets and rotations, using this. That'll work.
