  • Geo locate in surrounding terrain mesh

I do a lot of arch viz projects in a mountainous region. Views of surrounding terrain are important. I always photograph the backplates and will continue to do so. What I would like to be able to achieve is to somehow have a set up within Max whereby a 3D model or even shape of a house could be reasonably correctly located on a terrain mesh that would encompass the surrounding area. IOW as if or to actually have the house geo located in Google Earth and bring all that into Max along with enough terrain to cover a full mountain valley encompassing at least 1 - 7.5 minute USGS topo map. I would be able to re-use such a mesh on many projects

I am familiar with importing USGS .dem files into Max. The problem is I can't figure out how to accurately locate my house models on to the resulting DEM based terrain meash. Plus I'm not aware of how to get thecorresponding phoo/texturet mapping applied similar to how it appears on Google Earth.

This has been possible to some degree via Sketchup but that has several problems. One can geo locate from Sketchup into Google Earth, but I don't think you can bring info from GE into Max.Also, you cannot set up camera views in GE. One can acquire pieces of Goolge Earth terrain from within Sketchup. But, getting a piece of terrain large enough for my purposes from GE is very problematic and seemingly not doable at this point. Also the cost of Sketchup Pro is not justifiable for just this occasional use.

I would like to be able to do this in order to do view studies that show reasonably accurately what surrounding mountain views might reasonable be seen form a given location(s) inside or outside a project. It seems like with GE and Sketchup and Max all the parts are there, I just can't see how to fit them together. I would be happy to pay a third party to locate a house shape in a large terrain mesh as described if that was available.

any ideas, experience or suggestions regarding this will be most appreciated. Thanks!

This doesn't exactly answer your question but... I've played around with importing dem files as well for several projects, and despite a bit of progress, I never got really great results. I finally resorted to a 3rd part plugin, Terrain (http://www.west-racing.com/mf/?page_id=2979), that IMO solves the problem brilliantly. For me it works perfectly, generates the needed terrain and corresponding map files flawlessly. It was by no means cheap (it's $199) but for a plugin that works well and when weighed against the amount of wasted time I spent running around in circles it clearly saved me money.

Not sure of a accurate way to precisely get the house model located into the terrain though. I typically rebuild the site immediately adjacent to the building using the topo and then just match it as close as possible to the import Terrain geometry.

    Good luck.

dlparisi - thank you. that looks very interesting and may be just what I need. I have imported dem files before but trying it just now with a dem from the usgs and it is not working. the file imports but it's a strange and worthless editable mesh-mess.Pricy indeed but I'm taking to heart your comments regarding wasted time running around in circles. with all the capabilities that offers I'm surprised it doesn't include geo locating an object.thanks again - very helpful!
