weirdest max thing, can't delete objects

I have this one scene I've been working on for weeks, from which, all of a sudden, can't delete any object. hitting the delete key doesn't work, going through the edit menu and deleting from there doesn't work.. but apart from this the scene seems to work perfectly fine.
has anyone ever seen anything like this?

Have you tried merging all into a new scene and try deleting them then.

Are those objects linked into Max?

I have had this before. Mine was the graphics. The object was deleted, but it was still being rendered on screen.

No clue what was trigger this behavior but it happens from time to time, restarting max helps.

haven't tried merging yet, I reckon it may work but I was rushing to meet a deadline and haven't had the time yet. there isn't any linked object in the scene, if I create say a cube and try to delete it, it just doesn't work. as any other thing in the scene. thankfully, at sub object level, deleting still works..
