Correction - I do get this happening and yes, it is a pain

I'm using a Sharkoon FireGlider and updated to the latest drivers installed and still didn't fix things.

Ok, I've isolated the issue. It is the size of ANY object. Check how the bug intensity changes, depending on size of a single object in the scene: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/...912_100256.gif
Bigger the object is - the bigger becomes "step" of zooming when you are "scrolling" mouse on empty space.
I will be happy if that is just an annoying setting, introduced for "our convenience", proving that AD cares about our nerves.
      Available for remote work.

That makes sense to me, I'm only now seeing it whilst working on a big model of a ship (so, quite similar in length/wide/height ratio in your examples) - quite frustrating.

Have you posted anything on Autodesk's forums ? Alfred is very good at attending to these kinds of gripes users have.

Nope, I did not as first I was trying to catch this, to be 100% sure it is a bug. Also, there is this old bug with Orbit mode losing its focus - still was not fixed... And it is posted on Autodesk forums...

That's why I use a 3D navigator. First driver I install when setting up a new version of Max. Couldn't live without it.

Well, most annoying thing is that there is no such bugs in 2016. Only 2017+ I was thinking about 3D navigator, tried to use one, but i found it a bit inconvenient to constantly swap for mouse - navigator - keyboard. Maybe it's just the matter of getting used to that.

Well never seen this in 2016 to be honest. This is one of the reasons why i can't switch to 2017+ - this bug just drives me crazy sometimes! Looks like i should get used to CTRL+ALT keys or buy Space Navigator. And that's because Autodesk sucks once again.
