It seems MAX 2017 has an issue with remote desktop applications. I was having troubles with Chrome Remote Desktop, so I tried Teamviewer and it does the same thing; white viewports. Does anybody use something that works? Both my iPhone and MacBook show white viewports, so it could be an apple thing,

I use a hardware VPN to log into my work machine. Then use the windows RDP (Remote Desktop), check use all my monitors for the remote session. I can then use my triple monitor workstation at the office on my triple monitor workstation from my home. It's almost as fast as sitting at my workstation at the office. Running 3DS Max 2016, 2017, and 2018. Along with all of the supporting packages and I haven't had any issues.

Granted, I've never tried with anything other than a PC running windows 7 Pro or higher. I can also use my 2-in-1 laptop as well, just with only a single screen. All works well.

I don't use TeamViewer or Chrome Remote Desktop, but I would check that what ever solution you are running supports 3D hardware accelerated software like 3DS Max.

That's just a guess. I've been using this setup for 5-6 years now without problems. (Other than the network connection at the office can get flaky at times and cause timeouts.)

I do use Teamviewer a lot and never saw this issue. I don't fully understand what "Both my iPhone and MacBook show white viewports, so it could be an apple thing," means. Is the viewport on the host machine white, or only the display on your connected device? If it's only the device, I wonder if disabling Aero would help. Seems to interfere with a lot of things. Otherwise, I've used VNC in the past and had no problems... might be worth a shot.

I was trying to connect my MacBook Pro, using Google Remote Desktop, but I was seeing an old model when opening up a new one. Thinking it was Google Remote Desktop I tried TeamViewer, but I was just seeing white viewports. To see if it was just my MacBook I tried TeamViewer on my iPhone 7 and still, white viewports. I am trying LogMeIn now. I'll look into Aero, which I think I already have turned off.

I think if you have white viewports you have an issue with directx... try other viewport setting, like opengl for testing, I think it should work then.

You have to enable remote access on the computer and make sure you have RDP as an exception if using Windows Firewall.

To Enable Remote Desktop Access on your workstation:
              - Open Windows File Explorer
              - R-Click on This PC (If on Windows 10)
              - Select properties
              - In left panel select Remote Settings
              - In the dialog panel there is a Remote Desktop Area, bottom half of window.
              - Select - Allow Remote connections to this computer

Hit Okay and you should now be able to connect to you workstation via RDP. (NOTE: You may still have to add a firewall exception, if using windows firewall)

Yeah, I have all the. I'll try later. I install LogMeIn and the same white viewports. As usual, it is probably a 3DS MAX thing. I don't want to mess with MAX's display setting.

It was a firewall thing. I turned off Windows Firewall and it let me in. I turned it back on, reset to defaults and checked the Remote Desktop exception again and now it is working. I am not sure what happened, but it is working. I like it a lot better than the other solutions so far. TeamViewer funked things up. Every time MAX goes into it's Not Responding MAX goes half screen (verticle) and goes back full screen when it is done. I uninstalled it and it is still doing it. I haven't rebooted Windows yet, so it might fix itself.

While we're on this topic, anyone have any recommendations for easy remote desktop software to control a render node which I'm building? Or does Windows include something like that already?

(sorry to hijack your thread Bobby!)

Windows includes Remote Desktop and it works well within a local network. I've been using Chrome Remote Desktop over the internet lately.

Interesting, never would have guessed that.

                          Anydesk is my choice.

The Android app is also well made.

Also when using remote desktop on Windows, make sure to install Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection Manager (RDCMan) along with it. Especially when having to manage multiple nodes it's absolutely priceless. You can display all the nodes' screens simultaneously in a grid, and even work on them in these miniature views. Very handy. We are using this for managing our nodes internally over LAN though.

For external work I usually use AnyDesk.

Over the last day or so I installed Anydesk and have to say its pretty sweet and faster than MS RDP and the cool part is the IOS app for my iPadPro works awesome. I spent 2 hours playing around and doing some file management on one of my remote servers and all from my iPad, I couldn't believe how well it actually worked.
                              Cheers,
