  • Unfolding models

A guy in our office wants to be able to "unfold" a triangulated terrain model so he can export it to AutoCad, plot it out to scale and then use the hardcopy as a template to cut museum board for building a phsical model. The guy mentioned that there is a funcion in FormZ that does what he wants, but we only use Max. Do any of you know how to unfold a model in Max like I am describing?

you could use an uvw unwrap and unfold map if from there.

there are cheap standalone programs for that.
i did it once with formz.
you also get glue strips with those apps, and they avoid situations where it would be impossibe to fold.
unfortunately i don't remember the names of those apps but there was a thread at cgarchitect.com about it. you should be able to find it there.
uvw unwrap in max will do it partially but it will hardly be useable for paper folding because it's not designed for that...and i don't think you can easily export it to dwg with the right scale.

Thanks for the input. Thats what I thought. I had looked at PePaKuRa. It is pretty fun but doesn't seem to have any sort of precise model scaling feature. It would just about do the trick if it did.

I'd rather gnaw my leg off before using FormZ again. The horror.
