  • Points the death of polygons

    This looks really interesting.
Anyone know what they mean in their video where they say volumetrically rendered in vray for Maya.
I think they are rendering out deep .exr files
If they are just rendering deep exr images I am unsure how for example in the alien cavern scene they are avoiding gaps in the data from occulsion. Unless they are rendering the scene from multiple cameras much like you would have to do with an irmap?

Have requested to be on the beta but wondering if anyone has used it already?

Kinda hard to tell from the examples, but are the lighting, shadows and highlights baked in?

Right now they are baked. As far as I know, there are plans for realtime shading though.

Any idea of the workflow using vray and Atom Vlado?

If I render a deep exr and view it in nuke I get a shadow that is a hole in the point data.

Do you think they are rendering the scene from multiple locations to fill in the missing data?

Or am I completely missing something when it comes to rendering "volumetrically" in vray.

Rendering from multiple views and merging is one approach. There is a tool that helps with that, but it is also a lot of manual work.

V-Ray for Maya (and V-Ray for Modo nightlies) specifically also has a special baking mode to produce a .vrmesh file with the baked points on the surface of an object, which you can then load in AtomView.

Any hope this will special baking mode will make it to Max?

We spend a LOT of time getting heavy models from revit etc. and optimizing polygons to get it into real time.

The idea that I could render the model volmetrically to get a point cloud and run it in real time with all the detail would be amazing.

Would be even better if I could do it at the same time as I render an animation and have no extra render time

I remember having this conversation with the CTO of The Foundry years ago, suggesting this would happen, he didn't think it would happen, I was convinced it would!
