  • VPN for rendering with backburner?

I have basically no experience with VPNs. I have a small render farm in my office, and I have a few more computers at a second location. I would love to be able to submit to backburner job on the local network, and have the local computers as well as the computers at the second location all work on the same submitted job. Is this reasonable / possible? Or is it extremely difficult to configure?

Thank you for the suggestion! Have you actually used it for this purpose yourself? If so, any tips or gotchas I should know about?

It's not really all that difficult to setup, but it's FAR from ideal. It all depends on the size of your files and all the supporting materials. All of that information will need to sent over VPN which is inherently pretty slow, not taking into consideration the internet connection speeds. This transfer happens frequently and the slow the connection the higher probability for Max to timeout waiting to get all the assets needed.

If you really want to use an offsite location for rendering, it's best to just transfer all the data locally to the other location and setup a separate backburner manager there. Then all you have to do is copy the frame data back and delete the other files.

In the end, it just wasn't worth the effort to use an offsite location unless we were in a major pinch. Even then, I had to copy the entire project and setup all the map paths for the new network setup used in the secondary site.
