Ambient Occlusion?

Ambient Occlusion? Can someone please break this down into very simple terms for someone simple like myself? From the name I'm guessing that its something which prevents ambient lighting (GI) to effect surrounding areas.

yeah that's pretty much it, generaly it is a black and white map that carries the ambient shadow information.
