  • Intel chip bug

Has anybody seen a slowdown with the Intel chip bug fix? I say this because I can say that my scenes are taking longer and Photoshop is running slow. The clone tool in PS is a nightmare. It could be an NVIDIA driver thing, but I am wondering if it is caused by the fix for the Intel chip bug. I have read that the fix can slow intel processors up to 30%

...so was it REALLY an update to "fix" something that has been broken for so long, or are they now also using your CPU to mine?
        Kind Regards,

That's it, Microsoft is using our computer to mine... that's funny!

That sucks. Have you also done the BIOS update? I've heard that things get even slower if you update your motherboard with the BIOS version that includes the security related microcode from Intel. According to Intel, people should do these emergency BIOS updates be fully secured from the security holes. Someone did some benchmarks with and without the BIOS update installed - https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrac...atch_and_bios/ They say that the older generation your CPU is, the more the performance decrease.

If you have an SSD, you might also be experiencing some slowdowns from there too - https://www.techspot.com/article/155...ml#allcomments & https://youtu.be/JbhKUjPRk5Q?t=10m44s 4K read and write speeds are hit the hardest and 4K read/write are one of the most important speeds for an SSD.

I would check the GPU drivers and/or factory reset Photoshop's settings though before jumping to conclusions.

I haven't actually tested a 3ds Max + V-ray workload as there aren't really benchmarks for that, but there were indeed slowdowns when I ran PCMark with the updates on and the updates off.

At this point there are no is no known malware using these exploits in the wild, so you can use GRC's InSpectre https://www.grc.com/inspectre.htm to turn off the patches (requires a reboot when switching on and off)
In the event that someone does create malware for these exploits, I'm not sure what the implications would be for regular computer use (eg, browsing, but porn or warez sites that load dodgy ads, etc) with these off,I guess there is always the chance that someone inserts malware into an ad network used by regular sites and so even normal browsing could expose you.
But at present, the risk is negligible from what I gather.
