  • anyone do bitcoin (or similar) mining?

ive studiously ignored the whole world of virtual currency since vaguely investigating it when bitcoin first appeared

My annoyance at not getting on the boat ( and retiring by now) back in the day means i have a dim view of the whole thing.. not to mention the disgusting waste of energy (on track to consume 0.5% of the worlds energy supply by 2019 for exactly NO real-world benefit. they could at least heat towns with the damn things.. )

anyway, i was sitting here installing my second titanX and i thought.. i wonder if its actually worth mining on such a setup any more...(i actually could do with some extra heat in my house in winter)

tried to do some research and immediately got lost in the seemingly infinite number of currencies that now exist and the whole language that has sprung up around them.

i already have the (modest) hardware, but electricity aint very cheap where i live (circa 22 euro cents /kwh)

so anyone care to hazard a guess if id be better off leaving my machine off when im not using it, or wether i should be mining when im not rendering.

i guess in any case , profits would be tiny with only 2 gpus. .

    Nope,

You could try it for smaller coins as a gamble that they will be worth something. But the large coins are beyond diy mining and / or researching moving to a proof of stake model where mining wont be how the network gets maintained.

      We tried it briefly..
We set it up with Deadline, so it was 'mining' on machines at night when machine were not rendering. However, we had to stop it as it caused some problems on computers, creating crashes the next day when people were back to work.
      So we 'paused' the project.
Moneywise, I'm not the one in charge of the project, but as electricity is quite cheap over here, it was better than letting the computers idle.

After that, for the 'ethics' of it, that is an other story.
