  • Cannot get into BIOS (black screen) - can only go directly into Windows 10......

I'm relatively new to Windows 10 and am highly suspicious of the way it gives us no real choice over updates etc.

My new (self-build) PC has no way of getting into the BIOS, and I've read everything out there, but nothing works for me.

My mobo is an ASUS, and at the beginning, yes, I was able to see the Asus startup screen, where I was able to hit F2 / DEL and get into it easily.

Now, some W10 updates later, that seems to have disappeared, and the way you are told you can get into your Bios (by Microsoft) is to use the Recovery Option in Settings and do an Advance Re-Start etc.

But still that doesn't get me there.

I've tried every single thing out there, and still can't do it - so, I'm neither able to overclock, nor can I apply any BIOS updates......

Any ideas / solutions found ?
    Jez

The exact way depends on whether the bios is set as uefi (a new way by which your hardware is managed / new type of bios). When you're in Windows, go to restart and hold the shift key down before you click restart and keep held down. You'll get a blue screen which will ask if you want to boot to usb/CD and also enter the uefi - click the uefi button.

That's what my thread explained - the way I do it takes you to the exact same place in restarting the computer and choosing UEFI as your method.

The only thing I think it could be is that it is going into the BIOS, only it's not being displayed on the monitor (as though it hasn't woken up the monitor). I'm going to give that a try.

The uefi is the bios - maybe try using a HDMI from your primary graphics card (1st pcie slot)

Jez, you probably have Fast Startup turned on in Windows. It's a new feature introduced with Windows 8 and later to help decrease boot times but it has some drawbacks like not being able to get to BIOS/UEFI. Disabling it should fix this. You can read about it and how to disable it here. After you're done with setting stuff in BIOS/UEFI, you can turn Fast Startup back on if you need it.

That's a good point Alex . But fast start-up doesn't stop the holding down shift on restart method.

Jez, if you don't see anything on your monitor when you first switch on (i.e. Asus logo), the video is not being output through the currently connected graphics card output. I've had trouble myself with display port output from secondary graphics cards not showing anything until Windows loads.

              Hi Guys,

Alex, yes, I tried that before, disabled Fast Start, and still no luck.

Ben, I do think it is a display port issue, I'm almost convinced that it is getting into the Bios, it's just that I can't see that it has done so. So I've ordered some different cables connectors so I can try a couple of different ways of connecting my monitor - they arrive today, so I'll let you guys know how I get on

If that still doesn't work, I'll take the 2nd GPU out leaving just the one and try that too..

Thanks guys for all your suggestions.

                Yay, fixed !

Used a HDMI -> Displayport adapter (this monitor is old and so it only has DVI and HDMI) and went into BIOS no problem

                Problem solved

Thanks everyone for your help and input.
