  • Forest Pack 5.4 & Vray 3.4 Render Issue

    Hi all..

Kinda new to Vray & hoping maybe there's a simple solution to this so here goes...

    The applications I'm using are 3ds Max 2016, V-Ray 3.4 & Forest Pack 5.4..

I am attempting to populate the island mesh with assorted palm trees via Forest Pack using the 'LOD' feature.. So far I am managing, though when I render, mainly the palm trees come out all pixelated (NOT low resolution)
My assumption is the Vray settings are set at a low sample rate but not entirely sure whether it could be Forest Pack also?

Could someone please confirm this & tell me which settings I need to tinker within Vray as I'm a little lost.

    Cheers in advance

If you render with the default Vray settings, they are set to progressive and maximum 1 minute. Either switch to bucket rendering, or raise the time to render with progressive (or set it to 0 to let it render to its set noise threshold).

      Thankyou for your reply Vizioen

Changing to 'Bucket' definitely does the trick!!!... I set the 'Minimum Shading Rate' to 1 thinking it would speed it up but I cancelled the render half way coming up to almost 30 mins for the first frame!... Sooo the render below I'm back to Progressive;Minimum Shade 6 & Render Time to 10 mins.. Noise is .005 & Ray Bundle 128

Time to render seems like a really great feature to lower render times... is there a recommended duration & or other settings for production & final with projects output to 1080p in general?

Progressive for animation is not the way to go, as you will not have the same level of noise for each frame. Might want to read this: https://forums.chaosgroup.com/forum/...tion-rendering

Progressive can be used for animations - if you set the time limit to 0 (no limit) and some specific noise threshold you will get the same noise level for each frame.
You can also use the time limit for example if you have some fixed time (f.e. you need the results tomorrow) and want to do a preview of an animation.

Another issue now Im using VRay RT 3.40 and attempting to render a Forest Pack LOD landscape via CUDA.. but it's not supporting transparency!?.. If I change back to CPU, it works fine but takes donkeys years to render 1 frame!!!
                (i7 7700k/GTX 1060 6GB/ 16gbRAM) ..

From the renders below The cpu render is not 100% complete as I lost my patience waiting for it to complete!

The vray settings are more or less default so is there something extra I have to do in order to get the transparency via CUDA or is it something that isn't supported yet??...

I don't remember what was supported in 3.4 (a lot has changed since then), but I think it should be fine. Can you send me the scene? BTW have you tried with 3.60.04 ?
If it was that easy, it would have already been done

Will have to take it to class tomorrow & test it as pretty sure theirs is a later version.. If I have no luck, will send it your way...

So looks like v3.60 does the trick fixing transparency via CUDA...

Now another issue... (sigh) I want to do a test animation with the grass, then one with the trees & finally composite them together to get an idea at how it all will look... attempting to lower the quality settings in RT like disabling GI/filters & lowering the render time down 30secs/1 minute per frame, only to get an error after the first frame!? .. Is the render time specifically for 'Distributed Rendering' ??

Switched back to Adv & is rendering multiples within the custom time frame now ... Geez RT & CUDA!? .. probably my ignorance & lack of understanding its workflow but I sure hope vrayNEXT is more promising in this area!?...
